Come spend some time at the Ocoee Whitewater Center - just 30 minutes from Murphy, NC

Mountain Living Team - Murphy, NC    Mountain Living Team - Murphy, NC

Just over the Tennessee state line and about 30 minutes from Murphy, NC is the Ocoee Whitewater Center - a great place to spend the day for an outing.

The Ocoee Whitewater Center (OWC) site was constructed for the purpose of holding the 1996 Olympic Canoe and Kayak Slalom competitions. This was the first time these events were held on a natural river and it was appropriate the Ocoee should be chosen as the site as it was already one of the most popular whitewater rivers in the world. Constructed using 60,000 tons of native rock, individually placed and cemented into position along the banks of the river, the riverbed itself was narrowed to create the spectacular rapids necessary for the competition. Those same rapids are the draw for the thousands of people who come each year to raft or to test their kayaking skills on the Olympic course.

Mountain Living Team - Murphy, NC    Mountain Living Team - Murphy, NC

Since the Olympic events, the Ocoee Whitewater Center has evolved into a highly visible and much used venue. They have mountain biking trails, hiking trails, picnic areas, suspension bridge that spans the river, gorgeous gift shop and restaurant. The paved walkways along the river are perfect for watching the rafters, walking your dog or leisurely family walks. When the river is turned off there’s great swimming holes and places to fish. It’s one of our favorite places to drive down to and walk along the river watching the rafters and kayakers go by on the weekends too.

So what?s the secret to selling your home in Murphy, NC?

So what’s the secret to selling your home in Murphy, NC? Well, these “secrets” have always been the pillars of marketing and selling your home, and now more than ever you need to be following these...

Price it Competitively
With so many foreclosed homes and short sales out there (and even next door) you’ve got to be priced competitively. It’s a buyers market and they’re looking to get the most home for their dollars so don’t lose time and money by not pricing your home competitively from the start. Let’s face it; more and more buyers in this market will usually go for the lower priced home even over the “better home” that’s priced higher.

Showcase Your Home
Now that your home is priced right, it’s time to make sure you’ve got the “wow” factor. Many foreclosed and short sale homes will require some or a lot of work before the buyer can move in, so having your home st
andout and move in ready is priceless. From the first impression at curb side, to the inside and back yard, every bit of time and a little money spent really count. Check out our previous post on ways to showcase your home for more tips.

Lee & Carol Barbour - The Mountain Living TeamMarket to the Max
Marketing your competitively priced and showcased home is next. Making sure you have a Realtor partnering with you that will take great photos; do a virtual tour; create fliers; advertise locally and blog about your home. Your online presentation is out there for an estimated 90% of potential buyers that start their search for a home on the internet. Essential in our area where most of our buyers start looking online from other states for the homes they want to see in Murphy, NC.

Does Murphy, NC have some strange road names?

While driving around Murphy, NC you start to wonder just who named all these roads.  Here are just a few we came across one day while previewing some homes…

Lee & Carol Barbour - The Mountain Living TeamNow coming from Miami, FL any place call Roach Cove Road sort of gives me the willies. Of course we’ve not really seen cockroaches here in the mountains and this road is named, as many are, after the family’s name.

Lee & Carol Barbour - The Mountain Living Team

Way down into the woods was Break Wind Ridge. I can just see us giving directions to our mountain cabin in the woods and telling everyone to just follow Breaking Wind till you find us!

Lee & Carol Barbour - The Mountain Living Team

Then there are the roads where they must have been plum worn out when it came time to “name the road day” and they just figured it was Justa Road anyway.

So what about where you live? Let us know what creative, or not so creative, names of roads you have in your town.

Our Wild Edibles Walk in Cherokee County, NC

Our recent Wild Edibles Walk in Cherokee County, NC was a great way to keep up with identifying weeds and herbs in the wild and a chance to learn about others.

Mountain Living Team - Murphy, NC Weed WalkLamb's Quarters
This is one of our favorites. The leaves taste like spinach and are very nutritious and have often been used as a famine food. Use like spinach raw or cooked. Sometimes this plant will show up as a weed in your garden beds.

Sassafras  Mountain Living Team - Murphy, NC
Very distinct with its three different leaves that remind you of mittens. To make a tea use roots pulled from the ground in early spring while ground is still soft and roots are small is best. Scrub the roots and cut them in pieces.  Use them fresh or let them dry for later use. Put roots in a pot, add a bit more water than you want tea, and boil until it turns a nice red color then sweeten to taste.

Mountain Living Team - Murphy, NC Weed WalkWild Carrot
Eat wild carrots just like regular carrots. Wild carrots, commonly known as Queen Anne's Lace, grows abundantly in fields and along roadsides. The stems and leaves have the same frilly look as that of domesticated carrots. The root, although white in color, resembles domesticated carrot in smell and taste. It may be eaten raw or cooked in the same way as domesticated carrots.

Oxalis  Mountain Living Team - Murphy, NC Weed Walk
Also known as wood sorrel and another one of our favorites to add to salads. Looks similar to clover and has tiny pink, white or yellow flowers. Oxalis has a tart flavor, similar to lemon. Add the fresh flowers and leaves to salads or use them to flavor fish and soups. One word of caution: oxalis contains oxalic acid and consuming large amounts of oxalic acid causes nausea and vomiting so eat in moderation.

Even though you might never actually use these plants it’s nice to be able to identify them and share about them with others. Before you do use them make sure you have a knowledgeable guide and always have an identification book with photos to make sure you’re finding the correct edibles out in the wild. Many edible plants have mirror plants that can be toxic. Always identify a plant by more than one characteristic as some inedible plants may share a characteristic.

We stopped in to see The Village Green while passing through Cashiers, NC

Lee & Carol Barbour - The Mountain Living TeamWe stopped in to see The Village Green while passing through Cashiers, NC and found some lovely sculpture along their many paths. Established in 1992 with the vision of one and the hard work of many, the center of Cashiers was saved from becoming a hotel. It was given to the village of Cashiers for a community park. The property was transferred to the Village Conservancy, a non-profit charitable corporation which was established to preserve, restore and maintain the character of this very special community. Lee & Carol Barbour - The Mountain Living Team

Today, the now 12 1/2-acre park thrives, featuring walking paths, a nationally judged dahlia garden, native landscaping, low stone walls, boardwalks over wetlands, a children's playground, rustic pavilions with picnic tables and grills, a woodlands trail, and sculptures by internationally renowned sculptors. Click on The Village Green for more information.

Is Your Pet Sabotaging You from Selling Your Home?

Is Your Pet Sabotaging You from Selling Your Home? It’s just not realistic to think you can relocate your precious pets while you’re home is on the market, but here are some tips to stop sabotaging your showings. As you leave the house everyday or get ready for that showing appointment follow these tips…

Mountain Living Team - Murphy, NC

Keep cat litter boxes and puppy pads impeccably clean and out of sight

Keep all pet toys, kitty condos and feeding bowls picked up and put away

Make sure carpets and floors are cleaned of any stains

Mist the carpets and fabrics with Febreze, it freshens the air with a perfume smell. Air freshener sprays can affect people with allergies and just smell like you’re covering up something.

Put your pet in their carrier out in the garage or in an out of the way corner of a room. Better yet, load them up for a trip to the park.

Some people just aren’t pet lovers and others are fearful or distracted by animals. Doing these quick and easy steps could be the difference in having a great showing and getting an offer!

Come visit The King Kong Zoo in Murphy, NC

Things to do in Murphy, NCYou won’t believe how much this small town zoo in Murphy, NC has to offer. We were recently at the King Kong Zoo for a birthday party for our niece and got to spend a little time talking with Owner/Operator, John Curtis. Curtis cares for 60 animals that live at the King Kong Zoological Park located at the intersection of Hwy 64 and US 19/129 next to the flea markets. Caring for the animals is second nature to Curtis as he grew up in the zoo industry. Together he and his father, Stanley, have 110 years of combined experience working with exotic animals. One of our favorite animals was the Zeedonk, a donkey-zebra hybrid, that John had to teach how to run from rain. Our favorite cat was the white tiger that playfully turned into a little kitten when John walked next to his cage. They also fed the pigmy goats, played video games and had pizza and cake!

Murphy, NC day trips to great waterfalls!

Mountain Living Team - Murphy, NCOne of the best things about living in Murphy, NC is all the great surrounding areas that make for some great daytrips. We just had one over to Highlands, NC just about an hour away from Cherokee County, NC.  Highlands is a beautiful area and they have one of the nicest downtown areas to park and stroll along all the unique shops and restaurants. But those are for another post about our daytrip.

We hadn’t been over to Dry Falls in about 10 years and it was about time we made the rounds of some of the best waterfalls in the NC Mountains again. They’ve just recently finished renovating the parking area and just a short walk down and you can walk behind the overhanging bluff where the 70-80' falls drop down into the Cullasaja River through the Nantahala National Forest. You’ll remain relatively dry when the water floMountain Living Team - Murphy, NCw is low, hence its name, but you’ll get wet if the water flow is high. Luckily for us it was just a light misting of water that day.

We are surrounded by so much lush greenery, towering hardwood trees, gorgeous flowing rivers, creeks and waterfalls here in Murphy, North Carolina and the surrounding areas. If you’d like to visit our area or need more information on the western NC, north GA or east TN Mountains and all they have to offer visit www.LeeAndCarol.com

The John C. Campbell Folk School located in Brasstown, NC is a wonderful place to learn and experience all about our mountain heritage.

Lee and Carol Barbour - The Mountain Living Team

The John C. Campbell Folk School located in Brasstown, NC is a wonderful place to learn and experience all about our mountain heritage. We are truly fortunate to have talented performers and teachers come here and Aubrey Atwater is among them that will be at the Folk School during the month of August. Atwater presents a captivating program of traditional and original folk music performed on guitar, Appalachian mountain dulcimer, Irish tin whistle, mandolin, feet, and old-time banjo. She entwines a moving explanation of the music with stories from her life and musical journey. Aubrey's love of music extends beyond the sound alone. Her pursuit is to understand folk music as an expression of human history and a glimpse into the lives of "ordinary" people.

Aubrey Atwater is a performer and workshop leader who teaches with clarity, humor, patience, and a deep understanding of traditional music and dance. She has appeared in over 35 states and abroad, singing, clogging, and playing the mountain dulcimer, old-time banjo, guitar, tinwhistle, and mandolin. She is well known in the folk music circuit and as a dancer, thrilling audiences with her highly percussive clogging.

Clogging Class  August 6–8, 2010Lee and Carol Barbour - The Mountain Living Team

The joy we feel when we hear old-time music makes us want to dance, and that's exactly what you'll be doing with just one clogging step under your belt. Clogging, also known as flatfooting, jigdancing, or buckdancing, is a percussive form of dance that precedes tap. Enjoy live music while learning steps the instructor acquired from masters in Appalachia and elsewhere. Beginners welcome, but basic physical fitness is needed.

Intermediate Mountain Dulcimer Class  August 8–14, 2010

The many musical possibilities of the mountain dulcimer are part of its beauty. Moving at a comfortable pace, the dulcimer will be approached from a variety of angles: singing and playing chords, tunings, using the traditional noter, strumming, fingerpicking, flatpicking, and any other topics that "happen" as a result of group chemistry. You'll depart full of new ideas!

Click HERE for more information on attending Aubrey’s Clogging Class or Intermediate Mountain Dulcimer Class at the John C. Campbell Folk School.

The Cherokee Legend of The First Strawberries...from your Murphy, NC Realtors

The Cherokee Indian Legend of The First Strawberries

Mountain Living TeamIn the beginning of the world, ga lv la di e hi created First Man and First Woman. Together they built a lodge at the edge of a dense forest. They were very happy together; but like all humans do at times, they began to argue.

Finally First Woman became so angry she said she was leaving and never coming back. At that moment First Man really didn't care. First Woman started walking westward down the path through the forest. She never looked back.

As the day grew later, First Man began to worry. At last he started down the same path in search of his wife. The Sun looked down on First Man and took pity on him. The Sun asked First Man if he was still angry with First Woman. First Man said he was not angry any more. The Sun asked if he would like to have First Woman back. Fist Man readily agreed he did.

The Sun found First Woman still walking down the path toward the West. So to entice her to stop, the Sun caused to grow beneath her feet lovely blueberries. The blueberries were large and ripe. First Woman paid no attention but kept walking down the path toward the West.

Further down the path the Sun caused to grow some luscious blackberries. TheMountain Living Team berries were very black and plump. First Woman looked neither left nor right but kept walking down the path toward the West.

At last the Sun caused to grow a plant that had never grown on the earth before. The plant covered the ground in front of First Woman. Suddenly she became aware of a fragrance she had never known. Stopping she looked down at her feet. Growing in the path was a plant with shiny green leaves, lovely white flowers with the largest most luscious red berries she had ever seen. First Woman stopped to pick one. Hmmm…she had never tasted anything quite like it! It was so sweet.

As First Woman ate the berry, the anger she felt began to fade away. She thought again of her husband and how they had parted in anger. She missed him and wanted to return home.

First Woman began to gather some of the berries. When she had all she could carry, she turned toward the East and started back down the path. Soon she met First Man. Together they shared the berries, and then hand in hand, they walked back to their lodge.

The Cherokee word for strawberry is ani. The rich bottomlands of the old Cherokee country were noted for their abundance of strawberries and other wild fruits. Even today, strawberries are often kept in Cherokee homes. They remind us not to argue and are a symbol of good luck.

Last year they wrote and recorded the theme song for the syndicated cooking show “Heart of the Home.” Their new CD is entitled “Looking Ahead.” So you can see why you won’t want to miss the chance to come on out to the Folk School Festival Barn Friday night for this free concert. See you there!
